We can all agree January is a critical time for both coaches and clients, and coaches often look around for support. So we sat down with Harvey and Sarah from The Movement Blueprint to hear their Top Three Tips for Coaches to start the year as they mean to go on. These insights come from their experience and success in helping coaches refine their approach through their Education Hub. Here's what they had to say:
1. Establish Clarity
The start of a new year often feels like a rush to meet unrealistic resolutions. MBP emphasises the importance of setting clear, achievable goals to align you and your clients for success.
"The beginning of any new year heightens the stress and pressure to tackle numerous tasks within an unrealistic timeframe. As a coach, you act as the bridge between goals and actions, collaboratively mapping out a timeline with specific targets. A coach who can instil confidence and motivation will see the most success."
2. Nail Your Communication
Effective communication is essential for outstanding coaching. MBP highlights the importance of providing clients with the guidance they need without overwhelming them. By setting clear expectations and giving clients the space to take action, you can empower them to succeed. Tools like the FITR Coach app help maintain professional boundaries, ensuring personal and professional lives don't collide on platforms like WhatsApp.
"The biggest lesson I've learnt over many years of delivering online coaching is that clients don't need their hands held. They seek expertise to make progress and expect a clear action plan with well-communicated expectations. Striking the right balance with check-in frequency ensures clients feel empowered and supported while remaining accountable. Surprisingly, messaging your clients daily can have the opposite effect—leaving them overwhelmed and bombarded."
3. Coach With Purpose
To make January the start of a successful year, MBP encourages coaches to adopt a long-term perspective in program design. Flexibility in your programs allows clients to adapt, evolve, and grow, leading to sustainable success rather than short-lived progress driven by unachievable results.
"A program should be built to layer UP over 6-16 weeks. Layering up means adding to it over time. Therefore, your program shouldn't be 'full' at the start of January. It should be designed to allow for evolution and progression. Managing volume, intensity, and ensuring clients thrive are key to fostering longevity and achieving results."
